Voomcon Notes II
Here are the notes from the VoomVention meeting held June 8th, 1997 at Dave Howell's cabana. Well, okay, so it wasn't his cabana exclusively, you know, it was more like it was the cabana at the apartment complex where Dave lives, but I was just calling it "Dave's cabana" for ease of use. All clear? Good. On to the notes...
In attendance were Denys Howard, Dave Howell, Margaret Organ-Kean, Amy Thomson, Edd Vick, and Linda Deneroff.
We spent some time at the beginning discussing the pros and cons of various dates various people had suggested for the convention. Included were the following weekends, which we rated on several criteria:
The 2nd weekend of June
Good weather; decent travel; good airfare; bad hotel situation; good professional availability; good
staff availability; with conflicts (within a couple of weeks) with DeepSouthCon, ConComCon,
Chicago Comicon, and the BEA.
The 3rd weekend of September
Decent weather; good travel; decent airfare; good hotel situation (except Husky weekend in North
Seattle); extremely poor professional availability; poor staff availability; with conflicts (within a
couple of weeks) with Moscon, Incon, and Armadillocon.
The 3rd weekend of January
Iffy weather; poor travel (from places that might be socked in); poor airfare; good hotel situation;
low to moderate professional availability; low staff availability coming off Christmas; with
conflicts (within a couple of weeks) with Boskone and Radcon.
The 1st weekend of December
Poor weather; iffy travel; good airfare; poor hotel situation; bad professional availability for ones
with families; iffy staff availability; with conflicts (within a couple of weeks) with Smofcon,
Tropicon, and Loscon.
The 3rd weekend of July
Good weather; decent travel; good airfare; dreadful hotel situation; similar professional availability
to June, although they may be saving up for Worldcon; decent staff availability; with conflicts
(within a couple of weeks) with San Diego and Readercon.
The committee decided to narrow the choices down to June and July, which had
the most good points.
